It was just another day, and Harry was out for a run. In a good week he often ran about a half-marathon. Health was always important to Harry, and running was a passion. But one day, what he thought was just a minor injury turned out to be something no one can prepare for.
When Harry first felt something wasn’t right with his foot after running, he simply thought maybe he should just take it easy for a while – like anyone who runs as much as he does would. Over the course of the next few weeks, however, there were other instances where he felt something just wasn’t right.
After several doctor visits and tests, they confirmed that his body’s motor neurons were beginning to shut down. Harry was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a disease that shuts down your body and muscular system.
The doctor told Harry that it could be as little as six months before he would need a full ventilator to help him breathe.
What technologies are available to help Harry as ALS steals his ability to move? How are these new technologies going to be able to help him express his thoughts and emotions? How will they keep him engaged with the world around him?
The founder of a very successful company located in downtown Vancouver, Harry is determined to remain involved with his firm while the disease takes over his body. How will his fellow team members adapt to the technologies he must use? How can Harry continue to lead and grow a successful company? What are the new challenges they will face?
These are the decisions Harry is starting to plan for. He understands his body is failing, but that his mind and spirit will remain intact. These are uncharted territories for Harry and his wife.
Throughout this journey, Harry’s spirt and mind will be leading the way as his body begins to shut down. We will see what kinds of technology are available and what is needed to help him stay connected, so that Harry – determined to live – can move forward with the best life possible.
